What’s Taking Root at St. Peter Chanel

A quiet residency in story ministry

Over the past several months, something meaningful has been taking root at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Atlanta. Not a program, but a presence—marked by attentive listening, formation, and care for testimony. This work has emerged slowly and prayerfully within the life of the parish.

A Shared Discernment

This residency grew out of a long season of discernment with Rob Montepare, Director of Missions at St. Peter Chanel. We were introduced several years ago through Deacon Steve Mitchell and have been walking together since, listening for how God might be inviting the parish to create space for testimony and formation without rushing toward outcomes.

Reflections from the Parish

Below is a short video with reflections shared in the words of those closest to the work—parish leadership and parishioners who are simply naming what they are noticing as this space has begun to open.

“This intentionality in story ministry has helped cultivate a space for formation, reflection, and testimony. What we’re seeing here is both rare and deeply needed in the Church today—a slow, pastoral rhythm that strengthens individuals and the wider community. I’m confident that as this work continues, it will be a beacon and a blessing to other churches and ministries who long for this kind of space.”

Looking Ahead to 2026

As we look toward 2026, St. Peter Chanel has generously committed funding that covers half of the cost required to continue and deepen this residency. The remaining need is $12,000, which would allow this pastoral presence to continue with consistency and care throughout the year, maintaining a faithful rhythm within the life of the parish.

This support helps sustain:

  • consistent presence and accompaniment

  • story sessions and formation

  • attentive listening and pastoral care

  • faithful stewardship of testimony within the parish

An Invitation to Pray and Participate

Rather than rushing or striving, we’re approaching this next step prayerfully and transparently. If you feel led to come alongside this work, gifts of any amount help remove financial barriers so this pastoral presence can continue taking root at St. Peter Chanel. Others may simply wish to hold the work in prayer.
